I built ParkourNote, a personal knowledge management app that currently focuses on research: finding papers, reading PDFs, asking AI about them, and writing. A few things it does: Describe a topic, and an agent creates a project, searches arXiv, and imports relevant papers The PDF reader previews citations on hover, overlays translations on the page, and shows original and translated text side by side The agent sees the page you're reading and your selection; you can also connect Claude or ChatGPT via MCP A block editor with math support that compiles LaTeX / Typst to PDF Demo (7 min): https://youtu.be/yZs2nQJtgkg ParkourNote is just me. I built it in about a month: the web app, a Flutter mobile app, and a Chrome extension. It isn't even my full-time job. I work on it for an hour or two in the morning before work, plus evenings and weekends. Two things surprised me along the way: - The web app uses BlockNote for Notion-style editing, but I wanted Flutter for mobile. I asked Claude to implement a compatible editor in Flutter. It took about a day, and it works: documents round-trip between web and mobile. - In high school I worked as a video editor for MarginNote. Back then, a single 5-minute video took about a month, from scripting to recording, editing, and animation. For ParkourNote, I made launch videos for the Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean markets in one weekend, plus a second Chinese version cut for portrait viewing. I didn't open a video editor once. It was all done with Claude Opus 5.5. PG recently posted something along the lines of: in the AI era, you want to be either very close to the users or very close to the intelligence. That resonated with me, but honestly, building this left me a bit lost. I find it hard to think of a consumer software feature that current AI can't build. So if anyone can build anything, where is the moat? I'm genuinely unsure. The other side of it is exciting, though. Running ParkourNote alone, I feel less like a solo developer and more like a CEO of a small company: I manage product, engineering, marketing, and operations, and somehow it's all manageable. A one-person company feels genuinely possible now, in a way it didn't a few years ago. Show HN: TiddlyInstall – Single HTML file that makes cross-platform installers Hello HN, I wanted to show you some new software I designed (and Claude implemented.) It's called TiddlyInstall. TiddlyInstall is a single-page website that lets you easily build installers for all your projects. What makes TiddlyInstall unusual is there is no software to download and everything is able to work offline. Based on the project that it's inspired by: you can download TiddlyInstall as a HTML file and use it to make working binaries for Windows, Linux, and Mac. How it works: Most installers / binaries are custom per project. But with very few modifications they can be made general-purpose. Installers can be made to follow meta-data which can be vouched for by hashes in their file names, embedded data, and signatures. That means new binaries only need meta-data to be changed which can be done entirely in the browser. For the installers themselves NSIS was chosen for its amazing Windows support. Otherwise, the rest is shell scripting. I am very excited about it and would love people to try it out. All the code is open source under MIT. Show HN: Napkin – a scratchpad that holds texts and images for copy Napkin is a simple scratchpad to hold text and images to copy later or until you don't need them anymore, or when you don't want to organize temporary files. Clipboard does a similar kind of job, but it is essentially meant for copy and paste, it is volatile. Normally, you can't access the image or text you copied 10 days ago on clipboard. And that's fine—that's what clipboards are meant for. Napkin lets you create napkins on which you can add or paste pieces of text, URLs, and images. You can edit the text, insert images from your desktop, and copy any item at any time for further use somewhere else. Keep the app running in background, and reuse the items you pasted. Nothing is organized. You don't have to give anything a title or add tags. This is where all your mess gets dumped until you decide it's no longer useful and delete it. Just like a scratchpad! Deleted napkins go into the trash and are kept there for N days (30 by default), which you can change in the settings. Napkins older than X days (30 by default) will be flagged for deletion. You can change this period in the settings as well. You can also empty the trash, after which the files will be permanently deleted from your desktop. AI disclosure: This is a vibe-coded project. I spent most of my time testing it on Linux. Windows testing wasn't done properly, although it did run on Windows with some issues. If you try it, please test it on your system as well, and if you find any problems, feel free to submit an issue. Some notes you may need to know: - Linux builds are tested on Arch/KDE/Wayland. Windows builds and passes the full suite in CI, I ran older versions on real hardware and they worked. It is an unsigned build, so SmartScreen will warn you. - There is no global capture hotkey yet, which is the thing I most want. It needs the XDG GlobalShortcuts portal, and the session handshake. I cannot develop it headless. - There is no at-rest encryption. A scratch surface ends up holding tokens and passwords.
