Show HN: WebGCM – a global climate model running in the browser on WebGPU https://ift.tt/q2JXkgI

Show HN: WebGCM – a global climate model running in the browser on WebGPU I started this four and a half years ago. I wanted to build a climate model as both a toy and educational tool that I could visualize in a web browser. I have always been interested in meteorology and asked r/ClimateScience for advice on the math and physics on building an in-browser climate model as an educational tool, and a few people said it was far too ambitious. They were right. I could build the geometry, an icosahedral hexagonal grid on a globe, and I have an intuitive understanding of the math but integrating the Navier-Stokes equations and the physics proved to be too difficult for me, and the closest I got after nearly of month of work was a model that blew up within two simulated days. Fast forward 4 and a half years. I figured that if models like Claude and GPT Astra could solve a milennium prize problem about fluid dynamics then they could help me fix the broken model and iterate on it until my vision was realized. On Friday, I threw down $200 for a Claude Max subscription, and this is the result of a single weekend's work on top of where I had left off. What it is now, in technical terms: a hydrostatic primitive-equation atmosphere on that hex grid (the TRiSK scheme MPAS uses), 27 levels, about 41,000 cells at 110 km, with grey radiation, moist convection, a boundary layer, sea ice, a land surface with snow, a two-layer ocean and real topography. Every kernel runs on the GPU; on my MacBook Pro (M1 Max) it does about 70 simulated hours a minute from a six-year spin-up, hence the 50 MB first load. You can color the globe by twenty-odd fields, animate wind or currents, draw isobars, or view it from space under the model's own sun. The URL captures the view, so links open specific places. Caveats: an educational model, not a validated one. It runs about four degrees colder than Earth and I'm still tuning it, the ocean is crude and shallow, and it needs WebGPU (Chrome, Edge, Safari 26) for best performance. It's currently tuned for my specific machine specs but I suspect it will run well on most desktop-class Apple Silicon machines from the past 5 years. Source and design notes: https://ift.tt/MjZJdUA Edit: If it runs really well on your machine, something well above 100 simulated hours per minute (displayed on the top-left of the page), let me know your machine specs! You should also try to reload the page with `?N=128` in the query params and it will re-grid to an even higher resolution. But it will take a few simulated days to settle down after the initial shock from the changed resolution. If you end up tyring this, check out the Temperature overlay at 10 hPa height and you should see Gravity Waves [1] rippling through the top of the atmosphere! Isle of Ireland: Cavan

Today, we're excited to take you on a journey to another destination coming to the upcoming Isle of Ireland DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2 - the county town of Cavan!

Located in the heart of Ireland's lakeland region, Cavan is known for its picturesque countryside, rolling green landscapes, and rich agricultural heritage. As our map team continues to recreate the unique atmosphere of Ireland, we knew this important regional hub deserved its place on the road network of the Isle of Ireland DLC.

While exploring the area, keen-eyed drivers may spot a stone wall or even a rugby field, well-known local landmarks that help bring even more regional identity to the town and its surroundings. Combined with carefully crafted roads, vegetation, and architecture, these details help create a location that feels true to its real-world counterpart.

Of course, no town in Euro Truck Simulator 2 would be complete without plenty of opportunities for work. In Cavan, truckers will be able to deliver cargo to several industries that play an important role in the local economy.

One of the key destinations is a local oil supplier, serving businesses and communities across the region. Whether you're hauling fuel products or supporting regional logistics, this depot offers an important link in the supply chain.

Drivers looking for refrigerated or packaged cargo will also find work at a food distribution depot. Acting as a hub for incoming and outgoing goods, this facility ensures products reach stores and customers throughout the island.

In addition, a supermarket depot provides another busy destination for deliveries. From everyday consumer goods to fresh produce, truckers will have a variety of cargoes to transport while helping keep shelves stocked across the region.

Our teams have worked hard to capture the atmosphere of this charming Irish town, from its characteristic rural surroundings to its industrial areas and landmarks. We hope that Cavan will become a memorable stop on your journeys across the Isle of Ireland.

We look forward to sharing more previews from the Isle of Ireland DLC in the future. If you're excited to discover, explore, and travel across the Isle of Ireland, be sure to add this upcoming map expansion to your Steam Wishlist!

Show HN: Seal – Letters and passwords that open for your family after you die https://ift.tt/QXcWLgN

Show HN: Seal – Letters and passwords that open for your family after you die I'm a CS undergrad who has developed an interest in hardware keys ever since I used them for a school project a few years ago. I made a little chat app that only allows users to chat if they registered a key, nothing else. The backstory of how I came to work on Seal (this project): was that I was generating ideas with Claude to come up with an idea that only hardware keys could make into software. I was thinking about physical house keys and what you could do with those, but in software. I was already making iOS apps with Claude, and I came up with this idea and it sounded good. I had already worked on a few projects involving hardware keys and I already loved them. Today I submitted my latest app, Seal, for review in the app store. Seal is an iOS app for iPhone and iPad that lets you write an Envelope (an encrypted bundle of passwords, photos, voice memos, etc...) for all of your loved ones when you're gone. You can register hardware keys and assign identities for each person. Then you can create Envelopes and assign them to the key that you want to distribute. They plug in the key to their phone and are ready to receive an Envelope from you. If you don't log into the app for months, one of your designated key holders can start the process of opening the Sealed Envelope. You, as the writer of the letters, get weeks of warnings to check in at least once before the letters open. After 90 days of countdown, 21 days of warnings, and 14 days of grace, the envelope opens for each person they met IRL and exchange keys with. No one else can read the envelope or see the photos (even the key holders, Apple, or me) unless that envelope was designated for that person. What's different from a password manager like 1Password: emergency access there hands one person your whole vault through the company's server, so it needs that company to still exist and be honest on the day it matters. Seal gives each person their own envelope nobody else can open, and there's no company in the middle. There's also no server at all besides a free Cloudflare static site. The encrypted bundles of passwords and photos are in Cloud Kit. Sign-in/identity is a passkey Face ID/Touch ID or a Hardware Key. It's all Crypto Kit, so there's no dependencies required. Currently, it's just me and Claude working on this. It hasn't been independently audited by anyone, and it's iPhone only for now. Please do not put a live seed phrase in it yet. If anyone has advice for me as the lead developer for this project, I'm all ears! You can help contribute on the github source code repository page if you'd like. My mom likes this app especially because she's into crypto and she needed a way to pass down or give away the seed phrases for her wallets to all 3 kids without any question about who gets what and when. In the end, there's no confusion or hurt feelings after the fact with just crypto. Thank you for reading and let me know if you have any questions or concerns for me or the project! Show HN: I wrote a custom assembler for CHIP-8 in C++ https://ift.tt/LQ7bjP3

Show HN: I wrote a custom assembler for CHIP-8 in C++ I'm writing a custom assembler for CHIP-8 and just finished adding support for the DB/.byte directive so I can embed sprites in the ROM and finally get something drawn on the screen. It SHOULD support all OG CHIP-8 instructions, but still a ton of rough edges that I'm ironing out. This is my first ever C++ project, just like the CHIP-8 emulator was my first ever C (and emudev) project. It's so satisfying to write assembly and have your program spit out a ROM that actually runs in the emulator you wrote. All code is written by me (a lot of it livestreaming) as evident by the quality, no AI. https://ift.tt/hjk4YGb September 17, 2026 at 02:47PM

Show HN: Smart Mouth Billy Bass – another fishy LLM assistant Hello, HN people. This project was inspired by another very similar Show HN post from a few months ago called BillAI Bass. I decided to do something like it but take it in a different direction. It’s not a serious assistant and doesn't turn my lights on and off, but it has no cloud dependency and was fun to build. Hope you like it. https://ift.tt/mQE2e7s September 17, 2026 at 10:49AM

Show HN: I built a new version of my fun spatial 3D online meeting app Hi HN! flat.social is a fun spatial online meeting app for remote teams and communities. It's largely built like a web multiplayer game, and the 3D virtual spaces are highly customisable with elements and activities (I recently added surfing!). Live demo to try it out: https://app.flat.social/f/demo-flat Here's a quick demo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeinBNqL23s It's a solo, bootstrapped project built with Three.js, LiveKit and Rapier for physics. I built the first version during the pandemic and posted it here back then: https://ift.tt/KlErXwv I had a couple of months off this year, so I locked myself in an (almost) jungle house in Brazil and rebuilt it into what I've always wanted it to be. Would love to hear what you think! https://flat.social September 17, 2026 at 09:57AM

Show HN: Glu – installing Homebrew packages 2x faster on macOS I wanted to see how fast Homebrew installs could get if end-to-end install time was the primary design constraint. It turned into a package manager for macOS that uses Homebrew's bottle ecosystem, consistently ~2x faster than Homebrew on large install graphs. It's written in Rust, but most performance ideas are independent of the language. https://glu.run/ September 16, 2026 at 02:15AM

Show HN: A chess analyzer that runs in the browser https://ift.tt/XAIRmaT

Show HN: A chess analyzer that runs in the browser I play chess casually and usually struggle to figure out why Lichess analysis say my move is a blunder. Almost all the analysis tools will just suggest the best variant for a position, and you will have to follow the suggested engine lines, or play them out manually to analyze it better. So I built this tool to make that process easier for beginner players. Behind the scene: This app run Stockfish in your browser, at a position, the app will follow the engine's suggested lines, search for any meaningful situation like a check, a fork, a capture, material change, positional disadvantages,... and point that out with an explanation. You can see the app here: https://whyblunder.vercel.app and paste the PGN of your game. If you play on Lichess, you can also replace the lichess.org part in the browser URl with https://whyblunder.vercel.app/# to quickly analyze, for example: https://whyblunder.vercel.app/#cBVQFX8l https://ift.tt/n5XRTGI September 15, 2026 at 09:28PM
